Ozone Therapy in Dentistry

Ozone dental therapy is a holistic treatment that significantly reduces the presence of oral bacteria. This is a minimally invasive alternative that wards off the advance of developing tooth decay. With ozone dental therapy, the damaging bacteria that break down tooth enamel, leading to decay, are eradicated by altering the oral environment.

Ozone is one of the most powerful disinfectants. Dental ozone is 50 times more effective at disinfection compared to the most popular disinfectant – chlorine, and the effects of its action are visible 3,500 times faster. Dental ozone  destroys the cell wall of  disease cells leaving healthy cells unharmed and kills pathogens through oxidization of the cell membrane. Ozone does not leave behind toxic residues like chlorine based products. When you think about how the human body fights off infection, your white blood cells are fighters and are designed to create what is called an “oxidative burst.” This natural reaction punctures the bacterial microbes, effectively killing the cell. Ozone works in a similar way in that it as the same effect on pathogens like bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other disease-causing cells.

In our office, we use Ozone, also known as O3, to remove any bacteria found within the mouth. By using ozonated water or gas to blow into the micropores of a tooth, we can destroy the bacteria and avoid any unpleasant side effects.

Ozone has been shown to be biocompatible with all aspects of dentistry and has been shown to stimulate remineralization of recent caries-affected teeth. It can also be used as a preventive therapy in caries, root caries, and intracanal irrigants in endodontic treatment. The main advantage of ozone disinfection is the fact that ozone is generated on-site and only when needed by the use of an ozone generator. There is also no need to monitor side effects of disinfection, as they do not exist.
