SALIVA LINKED TO HEART DISEASE CASE STUDY
A new patient, who has abstained from dental care for two decades, presents with broken teeth and bleeding gums as primary concerns necessitating immediate attention. The patient's medical history includes high blood pressure, a history of stroke, and elevated cholesterol levels. Upon dental examination, multiple broken teeth, receded gum tissue, considerable gum bleeding, and diminished bone height are observed.
At BG Dental Wellness, our standard procedure involves conducting an in-office saliva test for patients. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive Lab Saliva test capable of identifying 11 specific microbes associated with various systemic conditions that affect overall health. Certain bacteria such as Aa, Pi, & Fn have the potential to seep from blood vessels in the gums to the heart, contributing to the deposition of cholesterol and other lipids. These bacteria can trigger arterial inflammation and, if blocked, lead to a heart attack.
The patient underwent periodontal therapy, ozone treatment, and adopted significant changes in their oral hygiene regimen. Subsequent saliva testing indicates a notable improvement. Furthermore, the patient has reported a reduction in medication dosages for high blood pressure as advised by their cardiologist.
